Free Flow Thinking: Spooky Action at a Distance
In the very successful sci-fi film, Blade Runner, artificial humans called, replicants, are used to work in jobs deemed too hazardous for humans. Unfortunately the artificial humans rebel, deciding they’d like to live long, enjoyable lives, just like human beings.
In The Terminator, intelligent computers, the first true artificial intelligence or AI created bv humanity, decide “in a nanosecond” that humanity is a threat and must be eliminated.
In The Matrix, machines again rebel but this time they’re a little smarter, they find a way to turn their former human masters into “copper-top” batteries to supply them with energy.
Finally, in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume II we see a race of golden-skinned humanoid aliens operating a fleet of warships in space by remote control. I think maybe they are onto something.
Consider for a moment that humanity sits on the threshold of interplanetary travel, people traveling to and perhaps even colonizing the planets and moons in our star system, called the Solar System because of our star’s scientific name, Sol. Consider that we will one day develop interstellar travel as well whether it be by wormhole or by warp drive.
Yet, even if we develop the best force fields, or shields, ever seen in the Star Wars or Star Trek universes, respectively, the universe is a deadly place, especially when exploring an unknown , uncharted areas of space. Imagining flying into a region of space experiencing massive gamma ray bursts, or exiting a wormhole only to encounter a super massive black hole. This isn’t even taking into account the radiation, asteroids, micrometeorites, super-Novas, and the like.
But wait, perhaps there is an alternative where humanity can take on extremely dangerous endeavors without risking his or her life? Imagine being able to travel to distant, unexplored regions of the galaxy, or to clean up toxic spills or after a nuclear tragedy, a means of accomplishing these dangerous tasks without entrusting the fate of humanity to the cold, calculating logic of a computer, or into the hands of artificial being with a murderous grudge against humanity for creating a race of slaves.
In recent years I’ve become a bit of fan of certain genres of anime. In one of my favorite gen res, called Iseki, characters are often transported to another world, some of which are virtual. It seems some Japanese are rather big fans of VRMMO deep dive games, which as of today are not quite as real as they are portrayed to be but still offer insight as to what might one day be, and soon.
Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and firms all around the world have been working tirelessly for decades developing mobile, nimble, robots for a wide variety of tasks. I’m sure most of you have seen the videos and if not, I encourage you to watch some of them. Mix these with the advanced drone technology used by our military and It’s chilling in a downright Terminator kind of way.
Now imagine for a moment living in a world where some of these technologies have become a reality and have now, with some melding together in a brave, new world. Now continue allowing yourself to imagine, for a moment, waking up in the morning. You take a shower, grab a cup of coffee and eat breakfast while preparing mentally for another grueling day of work. Once you’ve finished with breakfast you meander into your home office, taking a final sip of coffee before lying down on a comfortable, padded table, with side rails that suddenly rise up on each side. Reaching back behind your head you find it and, after donning your work helmet, you utter the familiar command, “engage.”
The world melts away and suddenly, you find yourself in your latest “office,” a Starship in the
Kiper asteroid belt.
“Good morning, had your coffee yet?”
The voice came from an android body with a man’s face displayed on the screen where a face normally would be.
“Yes,” you answer,: ”just finished my first cup of the day.”
“Good, because we have to bust up Quadrant 7 today.”
“Oh right, they found europium, ytterbium, and erbium deposits last week. Well, considering how much it’s needed back on earth for quantum computers for the egg heads,” you add, referring to the technology that enables you to mine an asteroid half-a-solar system away without ever leaving the comfort of our own homes.”
Let me introduce you to something called quantum entanglement, what Einstein referred to as “spooky action at a distance,” which essentially means that any action that happens to one particle that’s entangled, happens to the other, regardless of distance. What happens to one particle happens to the other, no matter how far apart they may be. This isn’t just a theory; it’s been proven to exist experimentally.
Imagine the implications for communicating over a long distance with spacecraft or people on another world, the possibilities are simply staggering and, just possibly, might make our little scenario possible. BY controlling what happens to the one effects the other so, in theory, deep diving into a virtual world that enables you to not only to see but to interact with an environment many light years away.
Operating in environments far too dangerous for human beings, we can build cities that will already be complete and ready for human habitation before people even arrive.
The possibilities are endless, the future exciting.
