Technical Discussion: A future terminator, or my lawn maintenance tech?

In the film Terminator, the cybernetic intelligence known as Skynet uses weaponized androids—terminators—to infiltrate and kill humans on a massive scale.

As a patriotic American who believes in American innovation and scientific progress, I try to support American-made products whenever possible.

But as an aging adult with grown children and a lawn that still needs mowing, I started looking for options that might make the job easier. Before long, I came across robotic lawnmowers, and I’ll admit the idea intrigued me. I read reviews, watched YouTube videos, and compared costs.

After reviewing several lower-cost models, I decided to take the plunge and settled on the eufy robotic mower. The eufy E15 is designed for lawns up to 8,500 square feet, while its sibling, the eufy E18, is designed for yards up to 13,000 square feet.

At first, I was less than impressed with the instructions. Setup—especially creating the map the mower uses—was a struggle, and it still can be at times. Tech support helped, but only so much. Once the map was mostly dialed in, however, the mower began cutting our lawn reliably.

The mower does not require underground wiring or installed antennas, and it operates autonomously unless it gets stuck, which happens occasionally. When the battery runs low, it returns to its base station to recharge. If it rains, it delays mowing. You can schedule mowing times, but because we have to open a gate so it can move between sections of the lawn, I usually just check the grass and tell it when to mow.

Because my front lawn connects with both neighbors’ yards, I worried the mower might wander where it shouldn’t. To prevent that—and to feel more relaxed while it handled the front yard—I went to Lowe’s and bought landscaping fencing, which I placed along both sides of the front lawn.

Since installing the fencing, I’ve been much more comfortable letting it mow the front and side lawns. I still glance outside now and then, and occasionally I connect remotely to the onboard camera to see what it sees and confirm where it is. Overall, though, I’ve found it to be reliable and dependable. I still have concerns, but every time I look out and see the lawn already mowed—while I’ve been free to handle other things—I find myself bragging about what a good decision it was.

For older adults and people with disabilities, a robotic mower can be especially helpful. I think I’ll have Eufy mow the entire lawn tomorrow while I work out.
